One of Dreamworks' more beautifully animated and emotionally rich offerings from their library, The Wild Robot is stunning albeit flawed. The stylised, hand-painted look and visual textures craft such an immersive world that it successfully turns nature into a character, but it also maintains a consistent emotional maturity to more patiently explore the technological adaptation to nature, the harsh cycles of life, motherhood and the power of kindness. Writer-director Chris Sanders isn't afraid to explore the heavier thematic material, but his focus on character relationships provides such an undeniable humanity that he leads The Wild Robot's thought-provoking ideas to something far more moving.
Where The Wild Robot loses me is how it takes its narrative into a more conventional direction halfway through. Sanders's screenplay takes a way too neat route that negates his setup of the simultaneous beauty and cruelty of nature and ultimately the emotional impact, whilst throwing in another conflict to stretch the narrative to feature-length, which I don't think it earns in retrospect. But even with its narrative messiness, The Wild Robot still has so much heart that it's hard to dismiss, and it's a stunning crowd-pleaser through and through. We really need more family-friendly animated films like this one.
