Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Is this controversial.. I have a feeling this is controversial, buttttt I’m sticking with the rating coz I had an absolute blast, so if you have a problem I don’t care

Mother is a big fan of this “franchise” so naturally she really wanted to see this, and with being introduced to it through her last year, I wanted to tag along as well, a lovely little family outing with my little cousins there too.. now to my surprise, the movie slate thing showed up and stated that this movie (rated 12A) would contain: moderate violence, gore and sex, now I immediately locked in coz I thought.. great fantastic right up my alley, forgetting my little cousins were also sat to watch this movie, then it started and the horror on my mums face began to set in as she realised what kind of movie she had brought them to… coz this movie is so graphic for a 12 rated movie I’m actually really surprised 😭 but hey.. I personally loved it

Micheal Keaton returns to the role of Beetlejuice and it’s like he never left it, he’s clearly having a lot of fun playing this character and that comes through with his performance, it provided a lot of laughs for me, one particular moment was his “serenading song” that had me and my mum in fits of laughter. Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega were also great in this film, I did feel Ryder acting a bit more like her character in stranger things here compared to how Lydia acted in the first one, Ortega kinda fluctuates between acting like Wednesday and then her character in Scream 5 and 6, she never really finds that solid personality for her character, but I get that they didn’t just want Lydia 2.0. My main standout in the cast tho was Catherine O’Hara, she was phenomenal here, every single time she was on screen I was laughing at her performance and her lines of dialogue, she was so over the top and ridiculous but in the best way possible

The movie itself is just so much fun, it begins in the classic style flying over the town while it plays the score by Danny Elfman, it just feels so nostalgic and like it has been ripped out of the 80s. This movie also feels more traditional Tim Burton style compared to his recent work, Wednesday being the main example, this feels much more in his wheelhouse and like he’s really been unleashed and it was so fun to experience in the theatre. I like how they still tried to do cartoonish fx too, like the “poor” cgi is done on purpose to make it feel like the original

But I was not once bored during this film, it’s just chaos all the time so it never stops for a breather. Plot wise there’s not a whole lot there, which would’ve been great if there was, it seemed like 3 different stories were going on at once but none of them really seem to go anywhere major, showing that a sequel like this wasn’t really needed, butttt everything that happens on screen is just so much fun that I can overlook that small gripe. There were also a few twists here that were immediately obvious but again, I’m not looking at this film as some masterpiece of filmmaking, I came to this film for a fun time, and that’s what I got

Obviously they have to do a 3rd film.. if they don’t then hugely missed opportunity, but for a sequel to such a beloved movie, this really nailed it for me, I can see the problems people might have with it, and why it would be rated lowly for others, and this 5 stars is generous from me, but fuck it I’m in a generous mood.

Overall I had fun (as I’ve said a million times), I do wish it released closer to Halloween, it’s definitely one to get you in the spirit. But this was such a vibe and everyone clearly was having a fun time here, bring on Beetlejuice 3 in my opinion… plus I can never be mad at a film that includes Danny Devito (bonus points that he was basically just being Frank Reynolds by spluttering shit all over the place and being generally disgusting) even if he wasn’t in the film for particularly long.. you get Danny Devito and you get my undying love. But all I can say now is that the juice is definitely loose
