All these years later and I finally came to the conclusion that Child’s Play II and it’s candy colored final boss toy factory showdown is my favorite of the series—it’s lean, mean, and full of everything that scared me about Chucky.
This franchise and I have an interesting relationship... I discovered it on my own via cable and not from my cool older cousin or some enlightened friend—and then I overdosed on it. The 90’s ended and I would rarely revisit them, only going to the theater or renting the latest installment, until I bought the Blu-ray box set when Curse of Chucky was released and since then I’ve rewatched them all at least once—picking apart nuances I never saw in my teen years and (for different reasons) really jiving with all of them.
When I was a kid this movie scared the shit out of me and I was convinced Chucky would trip my me down the stairs or murder me in my basement lol—I have vague memories of staying up late to watch this and finding safety in a giant pile of blankets. Brad Dourif gushes with mean spirited glee and slays it as usual, the foster home looks like a pink and blue human sized dollhouse, and the entire toy factory finale sequence with its gooey melted plastic conveyor belt face-off is aces.
I love this movie and its one of my favorite sequels, most definitely my favorite of the franchise, and I gotta give an extra Special shout out to the animatronics/effects work... in my eyes Chucky has never looked better than right here.
