Rohrwacher treads intriguing ground as her film follows the escapades of artifact-hunting grave robbers. Led by the always-charming O'Connor (who absolutely carries that cream linen suit), La Chimera is entrancing, exquisitely shot, and has a unique style to it. It's a slow-burner with how it meanders, but I was utterly fascinated by the enigmatic element of the film, just as much as the shady operation that these eccentric tomb raiders run.
The 1980s Tuscany setting is captivatingly captured through shifting aspects ratios and 16/35mm film. I was especially taken by O'Connor's upside down shots, which the cinematographer clearly saved the best one for last. Not all the sub-plots quite come together (for one, Rossellini's feels incomplete), but the whimsical and enchanting nature of La Chimera makes this one to remember. I loved the whole mystery with Spartaco and the gang's competitors.
