I'm not going to claim I understand all of the nuances of the film! I'll let Bergman scholars cover that territory thank you very much ;-) I did come to understand through my reading that Bergman's film was in essence a war between Science and Religion! And we all know where Bergman thinks the bread is buttered when it comes to that debate! Also With his love of Illusion be it magic or theater he sided with the flim-flamming magical troupe!
The film's title translates to Face! We discover right off the bat the troupe of unsavory swindlers put on a "face" to sell potions and get audience's to buy into their magical acts! That is their strength but we soon find out they are not the only ones creating illusions! Being the flawed and fearful human beings that we are, we all do it to some degree! Life is the ultimate illusion if you take it even further!
Any who it is the mysterious and unknown that floats everyone's boat and basically makes the world go round! So beware the rational man whom wishes to pull back the curtain and suck all the fun and magic out of life!
As engaging as it is entertaining! The acting is top notch! Enjoy!
