All other space movies wish they were '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
As a people we are obsessed with knowledge. Knowledge of what has been and knowledge of what is yet to come. Knowledge of what lies beyond the boundaries of our home, whether that be other countries, other planets or even other galaxies. '2001: A Space Odyssey' perfectly captures that obsession.
The opening scene is completely engrossing. The score and the cinematography are equally as powerful as one another, and start off as strong as they remain throughout the rest of the film. The prolonged and uninterrupted scenes create an amount of tension that is almost unbearable. The large scale shots of space and the small amount of the dialogue creates a completely unsettling watch. But once it finishes, a sense of utter fulfillment washed over me.
'2001: A Space Odyssey' weaves the brilliance of humanity and its endeavors with the terror that such brilliance can bring in an impeccable manner. In doing so, feelings throughout watching this film are mixed together, pride and fear combining to create something almost unknown to me. Stanley Kubrick had such an incredible, visionary mind and makes it hard to believe that this film was made almost 50 years ago.
