Grade: 74% 2024 Ranked - HERE M. Night Shyamalan Ranked - HERE
Even though his output can be hit-and-miss, whenever M. Night Shyamalan releases a new film, I will most likely be there opening night. Trap follows a man and his daughter as they go to a concert where he realizes that there is a trap set for him that he might not be able to escape from. This has the same pitfalls but also the same highs of a Shyamalan film and makes good use of its concept but doesn't quite take it to the heights I wish it went. Josh Hartnett elevates this substantially, he is unsettling in all the right ways and once the back half kicks in, he gets a lot to do as an actor. The acting in general is pretty good but with a Shyamalan film I always expect a weaker script. This script is full of clunky dialogue and there are a lot of scenes that are there for the element of surprise but may not really make all that much sense in the grand scheme of things. That being said, I wasn't bored once watching it and it really does fly by even though it isn't always as tight as I was hoping it would be. Certain plot points are almost too obvious and played as a surprise, but some scenes are legitimately great at building the tension. The concert scenes are really well-done and most of the film in general acts really well as a thriller. Trap isn't Shyamalan's best but it's still a solid outing. I like him as a director in general so this worked for me and I think it would likely work for most fans of his.
