Alex Garland’s Civil War is a dystopian action film. The film follows a team of journalists who travel across the United States during a rapidly escalating Second American Civil War, which has engulfed the entire nation. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Caliee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman.
Kirsten Dunst’s Lee is a renowned war photojournalist. Dunst gives a complex, nuance performance and one of the best of her career thus far.
Caliee Spaeny’s Jessie is an aspiring young photographer who accompanies Lee and Joel on their journey. Spaeny gives an outstanding, matured performance as we see Jessie grow from being this excited, naïve photographer to a war-torn, numb photographer.
Wagner Moura’s Joel is a journalist and Lee’s colleague. Moura gives a deeply layered performance that is filled with a lot of emotional moments but carry a lot of the humor as well.
Stephen McKinley Henderson’s Sammy is a journalist and Lee and Joel’s mentor. McKinley Henderson gives a superb, heroic performance. He is the beating heart of the film.
Nick Offerman’s President of the United States is currently 14 months into an extended third term due to the Second American Civil War. Offerman gives an intentional monotone, under pressure performance. He isn’t on screen as much but his presence is felt throughout the film’s runtime.
The rest of the supporting cast all gives phenomenal performances. The screenplay acts as a cautionary tale but very much makes clear that this is an anti-war film. I love how Garland utilize war journalists’ perspective to tell this story because they’re the ones who are risking their lives without any weapons or firearms but using their cameras to document the truth even if it costs them their lives, I can see why people were saying this film is a love letter to journalists. The cinematography and score is excellent and enthralling. So, after the early access IMAX screening had ended, the studio rep was taking down the poster and easel stand and was getting ready to throw out the poster, she winded up asking Caleb and I if either of us wanted to keep it and I got it. I absolutely love the film and this is my first authentic theater memorabilia. Civil War is already my second favorite film of the year thus far!
