Catalin’s review published on Letterboxd:
Leave it to Nolan the hack to make an irrepresibly disgusting movie like Oppenheimer.
Or, actually, no. Wait.
As much as I despise what movies of his I’ve seen (for my thoughts on his brand of cinema, go read what I wrote about Tenet), I was kinda hoping that it would not be as badly written as his other movies and I was kinda hoping that this would not be utterly despicable.
But it is. Oh, lord, it is.
Morally, it’s vomit, pure vomit.
Next time there’s a movie about a person that’s at fault for the death of an obscene amount of people, let’s make sure that Nolan is nowhere near it. Or we might end up with a movie about how Hitler’s talent as a painter was misunderstood or about how Pol Pot’s agricultural reforms were blown out of proportion. Or something along those lines.
Oppenheimer is not only written at times as if it’s a Hallmark movie, it’s also way too long - at three hours, it could’ve been easily trimmed to a leaner two hours. That last hour (or hour and a half), when “everything” comes together and we’re asked over and over and over to empathize with a piece of shit and accept that, oh, poor thing, he’s just a martyr, isn’t he?, is one of the worst political thrillers I’ve ever seen in my life.
In terms of acting, Robert Downey Junior is awful, Emily Blunt is shrill, and Cillian Murphy acts as if he graduated magna cum laude from the Christoph Waltz school of acting (to be fair, there’s not that much character to act as Oppenheimer is not really a character in his own movie, as he does not change significantly from start to finish - but the same can be said about the rest, they are just placeholders, not characters). It was nice to see that Josh Hartnett still exists, however.
I did appreciate one thing - the bomb sequence was quite well done and tense. But that does not justify anything more than half a star for this mucus of a movie. Though no atomic explosion in any movie ever can compare to the one Lynch had in Twin Peaks.
