I've always loved UP since the first time I saw it many a moon ago now, it's one of my mama PPeeps favourites and It might be the Pixar film I've actually watched the most surprisingly, but it's not my favourite.
The opening sequence is as i'm sure you know, incredible, soul destroying of course, but incredible nonetheless. I think it's safe to say it's one of the best openings ever in film if we are being honest, certainly one of the most memorable. You instantly fall in love with Carl and Ellie and to see their whole life flash by in a mere 5 minutes or so, always manages to hit home, even as a younger person. That's not the only draw of the film though, there are lots more likeable characters (I like Dug, but that's because I love dogs) I've always considered Muntz one of Pixar's stronger villains and the animation in particular here is stunning! especially the use of colour.
However despite my absolute love for this, I do think the truly sensational opening does blind us or leave us with rose tinted glasses so to speak to the rest of the film. Again, it's excellent and I love it to pieces, I just wouldn't quite put it in the same lofty heights of some of Pixar's best, Ratatouille and Wall-E for example. whenever I next watch it, it may go up again, that happens with Pixar for me, however, for now I'm happy considering this superb just not a masterpiece.
