I'm going to start this by saying I have basically zero personal connection with Mario, I have never played a Mario game and that has without a doubt played into my experience here. If you do, I think you will at the absolute minimum have fun with this.
Firstly and maybe most importantly, it looks genuinely spectacular. If they were aiming for it to look like a video game come to life (which I presume would be the case) they have truly succeeded. I loved the DK fight, as well as the Mario Kart scenes, they were easily the highlights for me. However, the star is Jack Black's Bowser, what a perfect casting he was. Everything else unfortunately felt kind of 'empty', a little messy and kind of boring to me. I also didn't have a lot of fun with this and despite me not caring greatly about Mario, I was expecting to at least have a little bit of fun.
I have no doubt that this is probably fantastic for the right audience, but that audience is definitely not me. Some enjoyable scenes but as a whole, it wasn't super fun and I'll have ultimately forgotten about this in the somewhat near future.
