Monster's University is actually one of the films on this marathon that I was dreading, Monsters Inc is one of my favourites, Sully and Mike are awesome and I did not remember this fondly...at all. However, despite my problems with this (I'll get into that later) I was surprised by the amount of fun I had and I was really happy to find out that it didn't destroy Mike and Sully anywhere near as much as I remember.
There was a surprising amount that I really enjoyed, especially the expansion of the Monster world, which is the one thing I wanted from the first film because the world was more limited. I was a big fan of the new monster designs, they were great and I forgot how colourful and beautiful this film was. Furthermore, for my sins I did enjoy a fair amount of the comedy and it got a fair few laughs out of me. I can safely say that I enjoyed it more than I did the first time around.
On to the few problems. I thoroughly enjoyed the new character designs, but not the new characters themselves. I thought they were fairly boring or annoying and I thought the villain, while she looked cool was very disappointing, she got nothing on Randall and Waternoose. On to my biggest problem and you are going to have to stick with me. Every Pixar film has a great, uplifting message mainly for kids but one that every viewer can relate to. Except I didn't understand the message being conveyed with Mike. He followed his dream, he worked harder than anyone else, wanted it more than anyone else, had all the skills and yet because of the way he looked, he could never realise his dream? somebody who breezed through life would just be automatically better? what are we telling kids? forget about your dreams because if you're not genetically perfect because you'll just fail and have to accept the fact that you'll have to settle for something else? either way, It didn't sit well with me at all.
Sorry for the longer review but I actually had a lot to say apparently. Doesn't need to exist, I'd be perfectly fine if it was never made. However, despite its flaws it's a fun time.
