AniMAYtion Part 11
Despite genuinely adoring the action packed and incredibly emotional last 30 minutes of this, it unfortunately wasn't quite enough to save the rest of the film. Again, I didn't think the third installment was bad, it just didn't have what made the series so great in my opinion. I found the majority of the first two acts 'cute', but I was still somewhat bored for the most part. The human characters felt somehow basic and almost flat, an unfortunate contrast to the last two films. There was little action or interesting sequences until the last act to really enjoy, the villain was super weak in all areas, so much so that I have forgotten his name and the biggest issue of all for me is that we got very little of Hiccup and Toothless together. Which was a big hindrance to my enjoyment because that's the element I loved the most and made this series what it is. But, it was sadly stripped back here to almost nothing, except a few sporadic uninteresting scenes.
As I said though, I loved the last act. The action was great, the animation was stunning and I'd be lying if I said that the last scene didn't have me very teary eyed. Overall, not a bad film, I just wish I loved it more and it felt like a more appropriate send off for this deserving series. I will give this a go again at some point and maybe it will click with me a little more.
