Definitely more of a slow paced, intricate character study than I was maybe expecting going into "Ferrari" but despite this and the somewhat minimal racing scenes, I still thought it was a pretty great watch.
It's very dialogue heavy. However, through a combination of Mann's typically classy direction, the incredible production and the two fantastic lead performances from Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz, (surprised neither have really been mentioned in the Oscar nom talk in all honesty, especially Cruz) I was never bored and constantly engaged. Then when the racing sequences did arrive I thought they were phenomenal. High octane, heart-pounding and there is one scene in particular that is easily one of my favourites of the year, for it's sheer shock factor and brutality, and I'm genuinely quite traumatised. In a good way.
Overall, well worth a watch! Michael Mann rarely disappoints and that doesn't change with "Ferrari" in my opinion, even if it wasn't quite what I was expecting.
