Unfortunately Brave holds the title of being the one Pixar film that everyone seems to forget is a Pixar film. Which is a shame because I think it's a really fun, underrated film that just doesn't quite reach the upper echelons of Pixar's filmography, despite having all the key components.
While Brave isn't close to being my favourite Pixar film, there is still a lot to love. I think Merida is a fantastic lead character, I love her. So much depth and stubbornness makes her hard not to like and honestly, she is up there with Pixar's best. It's great to see a female lead not dominated by a romance subplot, more films should follow in Brave's footsteps in that department. The animation is nothing short of stellar, over 10 years old now it still looks like possibly Pixar's best work, just look at the hair!! never fails to amaze me. I love how they delve into the history and the folklore, if anything I wanted them to do even more of it and add a little on to the runtime, I'd have been ok with that. And no review can be complete without mentioning Patrick Doyle's masterful score.
I'll admit the pacing unfortunately isn't perfect, the story feels a little rushed in parts, however, when it's good it's truly excellent. The archery scene (Wow!) and the superb climax is the first to come to mind. Maybe not perfect but deserves more of a chance and certainly doesn't deserve to be forgotten about.
