Rafael "Parker!!" Jovine’s review published on Letterboxd:
Mom (when I told her Tom did all the stunts): He must have a big insurance! You sure he isn't wearing any wires?
The first film in the franchise that I watched. I had seen portions of the finale of MI:2, but it wasn't until this film that I could claim I had finally seen one of the films in its entirety. And what I remember most about it is that it was the first film in which they really began to sell the saga to us not just as an action movie, but as one in which Tom would outdo himself in his stunts, going from just an action star to a cinematic Evel Knievel. Even dangling from a plane or with the halo leap, the anxiety of seeing this man hanging from the world's tallest building and swinging to the open window is the most agony I've felt while watching one of these movies.
But that's not all, the film is full of action moments that stay with you and a humour so natural that it never feels forced, making it the most entertaining yet. I don't know if it's the music (probably my second favourite score after Lorne Balfe's in "Fallout") or what, but there's something about the whole film and the fight stunts that feel almost as if Brad Bird (in his first live action film) is trying to recreate the same action sequences with the same inventiveness as he would do on his animated films but brought to live action, if that makes sense. In fact a lot of the film reminded me a lot of The Incredibles but instead of a family of superheroes, it's a "family" of super agents.
You don't come to this films for the acting, but Tom does a great job, as does Paula, who gets more fight scenes than Maggie Q in the previous one, which is odd. The late Mikael Nyqvist doesn't have much to do, but the threats and menace he presents place him high up in the series' villain category, probably behind Hoffman so far. Pegg offers some good comedic relief, and it's great to see Renner kicking ass.
All in all, some of the great action set pieces that sees the franchise shifting and becoming what it was always meant to be: an exercise for Cruise to kill himself with style.
