Fuera de serie: The Hardest Game Level Is The Saw one, Because You Will Never Win
When you make your name for something as unlikely as a great twist, some find a way to build a career on it, while others become stuck in a self-inflicted curse. It's no secret that the Spierig brothers found gold with their twisty film "Predestination," and they've tried to replicate it in many ways, but they keep failing.
Starting up with the goods, this is perhaps the best shot and overall looking SAW movie to date. The editing has been improved and is less annoying. A lot of the traps are also really cool, like the chain one, which nods back to the fifth film as well as the overall, detective-driven plot. Moreover, the players and the game share a nice connection, and are executed in a way that at times feels as tense and enthralling as the corn mill one. The performances are also pretty good, and it's good to see them followed up, plus the use of comic relief, while not always successful, is a nice touch.
Sadly, the script of the film falls short. There are some nice ideas and the way they play with time was rather smart, perhaps a bit too smart for the own writers because by the end as they explain the twist I started to feel I was getting a serious headache and was urging to see an “Ending Explained” video as it was hard to follow, even though it seen rather simple, but the way it was written made it all a bit too complicated. Furthermore, the use of this recurring thing has already lost its charm and now feels almost like a cop out. Sure, with how many crazy people there are in the real world, it's plausible, but as a twist, it's rather lame.
All in all, while as a SAW film it's alright, it's not a great remake since it harks back to both the bad and good parts of the franchise.
