Rafael "Parker!!" Jovine’s review published on Letterboxd:
Denis and I don’t have the best of relationship. Everyone places Beau Travail at such high regard, where I personally barely like it. She has a great skill to build and play with pacing and mood to the point I would say you have to come in with a specific mindset. Because of it, and because many of the ratings and reviews I heard upon its release, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to give this a try til finally the review from my good ole LB friend Cinephile just moved me to give it a chance… like how am I suppose to skip a film about a space witch riding a dildo? Like, let’s face it, I just told you guys that and if you haven’t seen this, you are probably more likely to do now.
And it didn’t disappoint, that specific scene was as wild as advertised, mostly thanks to the dream (or should I say nightmarish?) like way its filmed with only Juliette’s naked body standing out in the midst of a black background as she has some of the wildest sex scenes that could easily rival that opening of Basic Instinct. The rest of the film is shot in a way that, sure, you might say feels kind of pretentious at times, but if you are a big fan of A24 stunning cinematography and dreadful, slow burn and very existential horror films, this would hook you up despite its pacing. Most of it, too, its because of Binoche’s “interesting” performance and something about seeing Robert Pattinson’s mumbling his way throughout the film was very interesting to me.
All in all, certainly not a movie for everyone but one I would go and recommend if you enjoy slow burn sci-fi horror movies with some lowkey wild sequences of horny people going nuts.
Also, am I the only one who felt the urge to watch The Lighthouse after this?
