Rafael "Mister Movie" Jovine’s review published on Letterboxd:
Watched this in part because of the Oscar nomination and because I was curious about the whole conflict. In terms of the first, I can clearly see why it got nominated, as while you can still see some of Mirren, they also did a great job transforming her into the controversial figure.
When it comes to the latter, though, it not only feels pretty one-sided, but I don’t feel I learned anything significant about Golda other than that she was a chain smoker. The same can be said about Golda. She’s been called the “Iron Lady of Israel,” and this movie shares some similarities with Maggie Streep’s Oscar-winning film in that the movie is not precisely memorable, but it feels like there’s some nuance or something missing. To be honest, I did get to learn more about Thatcher in that film than I did about Golda here. I mean, other than that, she was a chain smoker and was losing her hair and Mirren does a lot of staring.
One thing I have to give the film’s credit for is that, other than the makeup, the sound design was pretty good. The cinematography is great. This is a film that leans heavily on style over substance. The score was pretty good.
All in all, performance-wise, Mirren does deliver and seems to put up the effort; unfortunately, the script is never on par.
