La La Land is a real mess of a movie. What kills it more than anything is it’s horrid sound mixing. The instruments blend in a way where everything is present and sounds full, but it’s very quiet and you can’t hear anything. And the voice is leveled to be just barely louder than the instruments, so lyrics can’t be understood. The songwriting is uninteresting, and Stone and Gosling are also both not singers so musically this film is a messy bore. There is also a real valid point to the fact that Chazelle made a film about a white guy trying to save jazz, which is just inappropriate from a cultural perspective. The cinematography is very pretty and the dream ballet is well done, but otherwise it’s rather uninteresting and a shame to think that this is the peak of contemporary movie musicals.
