Man’s desire to be a part of History destroys him and maybe us, too. Oppenheimer’s The Waste Land is our own. Despite common critique that Nolan mistakes breadth for depth (and there’s some of that here), do not find this movie simple or shallow at all.
But I do wonder how much of the sheer logistical challenges of shooting w/ those cumbersome IMAX cameras limit Nolan’s advancing as a visual storyteller. I think of how an Oliver Stone or Michael Mann would have animated the hearing scenes, and how heavily Nolan leans on editing and scoring to keep those scenes humming. This film clearly took him to some kind of limit. Opp’s speech at rally is the most powerful filmmaking of Nolan’s career.
I can’t believe teenagers are seeing this movie.
