Like his predecessor, M. Night, Peele is making the strangest would-be blockbusters around, and I'm here for it. Strange both in their telling and in their balancing of various tones and genres. I think he's getting better and better as a filmmaker. His eye, his ear, his sense of composition and pacing within individual sequences. He knows how to make you lean forward in your seat or hold your breath in anticipation. And the alien is a brilliant creation. But I'm not sure what's on the page here is as fully developed, intriguing though NOPE's ideas are. They don't quite cohere in satisfying fashion. Though they do sort of float in front of you, tantalizingly. I needed more Steven Yuen.
