First time watching the whole thing beginning to end since it came out, and despite catching stuff I hadn't the first time, I think I got even less out of it this time. Striking design elements sure. But Aster deprives his most potent ideas and dynamics for more time spent frolicking and spacing out in the very, very bright sun. Taking into account Aster's whole oeuvre, I'm a bit bothered by how funny he finds his films. Here especially, the opening is so profoundly unfunny, in a way the rest of the film does not earn and seems almost in opposition to.
Ok, the part when that one guy claps in Christian's face and Christian reacts with tripped out agony is pretty funny.
