The Godfather is the first serious film I remember watching multiple times with my family replacing the likes of E.T., The Goonies and Ghostbusters. It’s also the first film I remember having conversations with Mom about film characters. Not the performances, but character motivations, arcs, ect.
Mom wouldn’t actually use the words “character arc”, but I always remembered how she loved to talk about Michael’s (Al Pacino) journey from the beginning of the film to where you find him at the end. She also loved analyzing Vito’s (Marlon Brando) relationship with his sons and daughter. Oh, and what’s going through Kay’s (Diane Keaton) mind in that last shot.
It was just talking about these characters like they were real people. It was the first time I started analyzing movies in that way. Realizing that one person’s take on a film can be completely different than another’s. I’d also subscribe to the notion later on that you can see something in art like this that the artist didn’t intend.
Gotta say though, watching it now on 4K is a bit different than back then dragging out that 6 VHS Tape Godfather Box Set, getting pissed because when you get halfway through and switch tapes you realize you were too lazy to rewind it the last time you watched it. Oh yeah and the picture is quite better. Like holy shit.
