Spooky season vibes are in FULL effect.
Shoutout to my theater who accidentally played “Deadpool and Wolverine” instead of this movie and finally changed it 5 minutes in. With kids in the audience. Yikes.
There’s a precise moment in this film where it goes in a certain direction and it left me going “wow, we’re really doing this? Okay then”. And I think that encapsulates everything about this film perfectly. Not everything here works, but what does is pulled off so effectively. Going along for the wild and eccentric ride this is was such a fun experience. Keaton shines here as always. His increased screen time here leads to some hilarious moments that truly encapsulate the strengths of this character. Ortega also is well cast, and the supporting cast overall is delightful.
I really love how Burton-y this feels. Everything here is over the top, but it just works. The visuals are so good, the comedic moments work perfectly, the twists/surprises are fun, and it’s overall one of those rare sequels that not only continues on the events of the first in a way that feels fresh and authentic, but also (in my opinion) somewhat passes the first in terms of how fun and memorable it is.
Not everything here is great. As mentioned, while it’s fun to go along with the ride, there’s a few scenes I could have done without. Ryder’s performance did not do much for me, and overall some moments feel awkward in how it tries to explain the absence of key characters from the first, but overall, this is such a fun and quirky watch for the Halloween season that’s right around the corner.
