I will always tell my son, the moment when what you do stops being fun... RUN!
Obsession, jealousy, envy, over-bearing parents, body-horror, a full-blown mental breakdown, the awful male gaze, womanising, chauvinistic, manipulative and controlling men, "Black Swan" is a panic attack waiting to happen. Trust me, I know. I've inflicted it upon myself twice now!
All the men in this bleak and anxiety-inducing world, are scumbags. Even Sebastian Stan, and especially Vincent Cassell. Come to think of it, all the women - except from the gullible and extremely insecure Nina - are pretty mean to. The world Aronosky has created is full of judgment, jealousy and narcissism.
Viewers are taken on a stomach churning unravelling of the lead protagonist, as her mind slowly falls apart due to the mental and physical pressure of obsessing over achieving perfection. Lose yourself! Lose yourself! Lose yourself... but at what cost? I always question, "would I be willing to sacrifice the fun in what I love, to be the greatest in the world at what I do?" And I like to think, I will never sacrifice the fun for glory.
