It’s been 30 years since this film has released and I wanted to watch what was once my favorite film again. I’ve yapped and talked a lot about this film in my last two entries I believe, but this film just has a more special place in my heart and with its obvious underlying theme of hope, it’s an easy perfect film.
I’ve always loved the bond formed in this film between Andy and Redd, it’s a great bond that actually made me tear up for the ending of the film on my first watch, and I still believe it’s one of the greatest endings to a film. Another thing I haven’t really mentioned before that I really loved was Brooke’s story, it really shows the consequences and aftermath of prison and it’s honestly quite sad. The bird he raises being free from the prison may have also experienced the same thing as Brooke as that bird never got to go out and do bird things which is even more sad to think about. The whole corrupted government aspect of the film too is really a view on life itself as some issues here are happening in the real world.
Honestly, 30 years later, and this film can still stand on its own among some of the greatest films with one of the greatest endings in film history. Will definitely be rewatching as my liking for the film went down a bit after watching more and more as time goes on. (Also side note, I am looking for recommendations so if you have any please let me know 🙏)
