I'm sitting here questioning myself why was i more scared of the monsters in A Quiet Place: Day One than Nicholas Cage in flour dust makeup. It fails as a mystery movie and fails at being a horror movie. Yes, Cage is going crazy af with his role but comes off as more unintentionally silly than frightening. All I can think of in my head while watching his performance is "You know what? He can actually be a really good lead vocalist in a metal band." The more i think about the big reveal about who's behind all of this, the more i think it doesn't feel earned since there's either little to no buildup to it and felt very random and unconvincing which makes the film wasted.
With that said, I absolutely loved the atmospheric cinematography, the aspect ratio changes, and the performances. It's possibly just too self-serious and bleak for my taste. At the same time though, i'm really glad that a film like this is popping off at the box office so much, that i keep seeing theaters adding more showtimes at the last minute. Even the theater that my friend and i went to decided to add a 10:45pm Cinemark XD showing about an hour beforehand and said "fuck it, let's do that." I guess we owe it all to the flawless marketing behind it.
