8/10. Inside Out 2 passes as a serviceable sequel filled with humor, enjoyment, emotion, and pretty animation.
-The Blatantly Obvious:
Yeah, it’s definitely not as good as the fantastic first film. On the other hand, it’s still a good movie. Yeah, it’s not as original or surprising as the first. At least it isn’t one of those awful sequels where the filmmakers haphazardly slapped everything together.
-The Good:
It’s funny, fast paced, and filled with great characters. This puts Pixar on a corrective course from the past couple of lackluster years. Pixar mixed in their signature blend of humor, pretty animation, and jokes the whole family can laugh at. I really enjoyed the film and did laugh quite hard a couple of times. Anxiety chugging down about five energy drinks before bedtime? Haha, I can totally relate to that. I know that joke appeals to many adults. I liked how they made the whole film relatable and had puberty causing panic in Riley’s mind.
-The Bad:
It was lacking some of the heart from the first film. By serviceable, I mean it’s a good movie in its own right. But the awe from the first one is gone. It’s definitely not The Dark Knight, Terminator 2, or Toy Story 2 epic level of sequels. It’s mid but doesn’t skid off into Speed 2, Space Jam 2, or Aquaman 2 territory. Seems like Anxiety’s character arc was exactly the same as Joy’s in the first film.
-The Ugly:
Your teenager self looking into a mirror. Seriously though, I wasn’t mind blown from the beauty of the animation. Pretty but not top notch.
-The Final Verdict:
It’s worth spending money at the theater to see it. Wow, it’s absolutely running away at the box office and just hit over one billion dollars. My wife absolutely loved the first one. She agrees that Inside Out 2 is a funny, enjoyable, serviceable sequel.
