#50 - Take your pick from Asian Horror Challenge 2023
Progress: 15/61
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome... the family members!" (?!)
Much like "Baskin", Housewife (also from Can Evrenol) was another movie that I was curious about, so it was a "natural" pick for me to add it to the challenge ^_^
Definitely a weird, quirky one. (again, not your regular "cup of tea" lol)
Two aspects came to mind.
I thought the 1st half of the movie was, despite it's striking beginning, quite vague and a bit draggy. I'm pretty sure it could've been shorter (and the movie is short :S).
It might've just been me but the leading actress (Clémentine Poidatz) just felt like an awkward cast selection to me.
On the other hand, the sound department was very strong throughout (though it seemed to went AWOL for a stretch). Sometimes, it even led the narrative in a very effective way.
Thankfully, better late than never, the movie's last 25 min are its "strongest". The visuals and plot/"narrative" get (uber-)stronger (btw, I think the movie was well shot along the way) and things get (a LOT) more interesting (if a bit messy and inconsistent, IMO) and gory. I think it's fair to say the movie goes to another level (maybe a few levels, to be honest lol).
The ending was quite.... something (it actually reminded me something from a certain japanese director lol). While the last 25 minutes are... how should I say... "in a world of their own", the movie definitely needed more context, IMO (if you care about that sort of thing, of course).
Still, when push comes to shove, the movie is wildly inconsistent and messy but also noteworthy and (dare I say) impressive, at times, IMO. To his credit, Evrenol doesn't seem afraid to take chances and, for better or worse, this movie again leaves its mark.
I think "Baskin" was maybe more consistent than "Housewife" but, on the other hand, "Housewife" dares to go even further than its predecessor.
PS - If there isn't one yet, we need a third movie that sort of gets "Baskin"'s 2nd third along with "Housewife"'s last 25 minutes, so we're only needing a very strong beginning to mesh with those two parts O:) :D
