Lovely immersive character study that focuses on the moral implications of creating a literal death machine that will lead to the end of the world . Incredibly bleak but also so satisfying with the way the narrative unfolds. Adored the beginning of the Cold War that it presents. (Truman was the craziest president ever man😭), set mostly during the beginning of the second red scare in the 40s/50s and the fear and overall paranoia that America had over left wing intellectuals and the potential of Soviet spies and interference, but really using it as a means to just exercise power. It’s kind of terrifying how his creation becomes something beyond his control, and then is silenced and threatened over simply showing concern over the implications it might have moving forward .
The sequences that present his guilt and paranoia are so heightened and expressionistic and I love the choice to not show the actual bombings. And simply letting the film focus solely on the biopic and the constant issues and events that concern the subject. Such a lovely biopic that also acts as a forecast for the future!. I think this also just works due to how psychologically interesting the subject is.
