*Me watching George Miller finally succumb to the peer pressure of using extremely obvious CGI*

Not gonna lie, I was getting pretty worried that Miller would tarnish the legacy of Fury Road with an underwhelming and completely unnecessary prequel movie…but good lord, was I an idiot. This behemoth goes fucking balls-to-and-THROUGH-the-wall from the very first dirt road motorcycle chase to the very last…dirt road motorcycle chase. Yeah, there is definitely a ton of CGI, but there’s also still an ungodly amount of insane practical stunts and a surprisingly large focus on graphic violence—a couple of the extended chase scenes in particular stand toe-to-toe with Fury Road—that remind us all why Georgey boy lives, breathes, and eats sand & grease for a good ten months out of each year. 

ATJ and Hemsworth (who’s a total ham but also apparently a real actor??) are just fucking electric. We go extremely deeper into the world surrounding the central Citadel and spend way more time with those crazy fuckers we (kinda) know and (really) love like Immortan Joe, the People Eater, the Bullet Farmer, and (my favorite) Scrotus and Rictus Erectus (whom I kept mentally referring to as Biggus Dickus). There’s a buttload of playful nods and callouts to the previous film, especially when that cheeky bastard GUITAR GUY makes his mandatory one-second appearance, and the odyssey that is Furiosa’s years-long central quest for revenge is not only paced to perfection but also nothing short of magnificent. 

“DO YOU HAVE IT IN YOU TO MAKE IT EPIC?”

Oh yeah, this is the easiest 5-spot I’ve handed out in a hot minute. Plus, at the end of day, the thing never ever forgets what it really, truly is: just another average Thursday in Australia. 

P.S. Pretty solid year for endless sprawling desert wastelands, eh?
