I am stunned. I was really looking forward to Oppenheimer but I was not expecting this. This is not just a movie. It’s an experience. And an amazing experience while we’re at it. The cast is amazing, the editing is stellar and the story is incredible.
The acting is amazing to start with. Cillian Murphy is incredible as J. Robert Oppenheimer and probably delivers the best performance of the year so far. He has a lot of death stares like always and has some great monologues and Murphy plays his anxiety so well. Robert Downey Jr. is also great. He was more in the movie than expected and is so good as Lewis Strauss. Emily Blunt is also great as Kitty and has some great moments with Oppenheimer. Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and Benny Safdie are also great.
The story is also great. I know it’s based on a real story so I can’t really praise the story and how it plays out, but let’s just say Nolan handled the source material perfectly. I knew about Oppenheimer’s story but apparently I knew like one percent. I learned so much without the movie feeling like a history lesson. It’s a movie and an experience that stays with you and tells Oppenheimer’s story in such an amazing way.
The bomb scene, and I can’t say too much about it, but it’s incredible. There’s like a set-up for this scene and it’s riveting. My palms were sweating so hard and when it happens…my entire theater went silent and the sound and editing was the best I’ve ever seen. The movie is also pretty disturbing…in a good way. There’s a lot of scenes where our main character fins himself traumatized by guilt and realization and those are some of the best scenes I’ve seen all year.
But this movie does have one big issue and that is it’s runtime and pacing. It never gets boring but it does really stretch and goes on for too long. Like I said, it’s not boring but it’s stretching and at some points it just felt very bloated and too much in those moments. I may sound a little weird right now, so let’s just say the runtime was an issue.
Overall, Oppenheimer is a huge win. I can totally see my rating going up on rewatch because it’s a beautiful and haunting film that I still need to process.
