Michelle Flores’s review published on Letterboxd:
The original Beetlejuice means the world to me. The film, along with the animated series, was a huge part of my childhood. Visiting Universal Studios and watching the Beetlejuice show alongside the Universal Monsters was the highlight of the trip. Suffice it to say, Beetlejuice holds a special place in my heart.
This new film looks visually impressive and I did have some fun (mainly thanks to Bob), but it’s precisely why I tend to avoid sequels and remakes. Why must such an important IP be handed over to cynical and whiny teenagers? Lydia Deetz, as a teenager, was dark, smart, creative, and introverted—a character all girls aspired to be like. Despite her darkness, she remained innocent and open to believing in other worlds. Ortega’s portrayal was just so hard to connect with. Also, her casting—she doesn’t need to be in every '90s revival.
The script was disjointed, and the editing didn’t help. With what felt like four different storylines, the film ended up as a chaotic mess, lacking the soul and authenticity of its predecessor. Forced musical montages. The wedding scene was cringe to watch, and the film seemed to end multiple times with the Bride of Chucky sequence. It felt like an overstuffed, over-scripted version of Beetlejuice—essentially Beetlejuice on steroids.
On a positive note, it was great to hear Danny Elfman’s music again.
