Mike Apps🍿’s review published on Letterboxd:
2009 was a really ominous year for Hollywood blockbusters:
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe were Hasbro products laying the foundation for what tentpoles would look like in the next decade;
X Men Origins was proof that the franchise had bet it all on Wolverine's character;
New Moon was cementing the viability of cheap Young Adult fiction;
Avatar was the shape of blockbuster filmmaking to come;
Half Blood Prince was the last time learning magic would ever be fun;
Zombieland was Hollywood's late response to Shaun of the Dead and proof that the living dead would come to define the 2010s
.....you can see the warning signs of soon-to-be formulas we hadn't yet gotten tired of at the time. But one 2009 film that was positively prescient and forward thinking about the future zeitgeist was Jennifer's Body.
This movie is an unintentional metaphor for Megan Fox's career! It was poorly marketed to teenage boys just as the actress' appeal was being branded by and for a male gaze without appreciation for her acting talent.
Jennifer getting sacrificed by a fame seeking band who are indifferent to her pleas for help is eerily synonymous with suits and execs not caring about Fox getting disrespected or hurt as long as they got what they wanted from her image.
Jennifer gaslighting Needy for having suspicions is a perfect analogy for every late night show host cutting off Fox every time she attempts to speak her truth.....Jennifer hovering is symbolic of this movie still resonant over a decade later while many others like it are already dated on arrival.
I skipped this for 11 years because I had just been disappointed by Sorority Row that same year. It was on a 14 hour flight and I just couldn't bring myself to watch another high school themed horror flick. Jennifer's Body faded from my memory all this time, until now. A worthy companion to high school cult classics like Heathers and Mean Girls!
