This movie is utterly bonkers. I love it.
Granted, it does overstay its welcome at times (I mean, did this REALLY need to be 2 hours?), and the tonal shifts are....novel to say the least. But I cannot and will not complain when the animation is bursting with creativity, and the raccoons have such infectious presence.
This is Ghibli at their most pure FUN, and even then they manage to get you emotionally invested in seeing the coming-of-age of these raccoons. All the way to the end, I smiled like an idiot seeing that reunion. And well, I guess it isn't a Ghibli movie without some good ol' welcome environmentalism.
