My very first AniMay has officially begun! Basically, all (well, ok most) of what I'll be watching every May will be good ol' Japanimation.
Today it's Ghibli's (not really but just go with it) 1st film: Nasuicaa. And while certainly really enjoyable-I couldn't help hearing "the manga is probably better" nagging in the back of my head.
I'm sure there's a great, tightly wound plot in here, but that'll require some rewatches. For now, it was a little too much for me to keep track of everything at times.
Other than that, Nausicaa is a truly wholesome protagonist, the muddy and sludgy animation is on-point, the production design is excellent, it's got great spectacle (anything involving airships), and it reminded me a lot of Princess Mononoke, which sees Miyazaki's reverence for nature bloom. But ultimately, Mononoke worked a lot better for me.
