A German miniseries edited down into a film running a mere 156 minutes, The Tunnel tells the story of a group of East German escapees trying to dig a 145 metre tunnel from West Germany under the Berlin Wall (okay, fence really as it was in 1961) to liberate various friends and family members.
Despite the length, The Tunnel is never dull and the final 25 minutes or so are buttock-clenchingly tense.
it's apparently based on real life events; how closely it replicates what actually happened I do not know, but it's a good yarn.
