James Stewart is joined by an impressive cast including Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine and George Kennedy for this tale of a cargo plane that crash lands in the Sahara with no hope of rescue. The Flight of the Phoenix is a film of its time, the score can be overpowering (turns out indecipherable dialogue isn't only a modern movie phenomenon after all) and it does take itself very seriously. But despite all that it's a great study of human relationships placed under tremendous strain and given the relatively high number of casualties during the running time it does keep the audience in suspense as to whether they will make it out alive.
