Probably going to be an unedited wall of words, but I stayed up too late last night and I watched this at 9am. You know what they say though-- no rest for the wicked. I'll see myself out.
Waited a couple weeks, but still made it to the theaters to see this on the big screen. Great decision. Almost three hours in length, no restroom breaks, and I only checked my watch once (near the end), so I call that a resounding success.
I'm fairly ignorant re: the musical/source material. Not ignorant re: Ariana Grande. The Galinda/Glinda role definitely allows Grande to shine.
The only two movies I've seen with Cynthia Erivo are Widows and the Robert Zemeckis Pinocchio (easily two of my least favorite movies of recent years-- no fault of Cynthia's). Here's to hoping she continues getting cast in better projects than the two aforementioned because she's great in this (I know people like Widows).
Not a major issue, but sometimes the world of Oz overshadows this movie (don't know I'm phrasing this correctly). Like all of the things alluded to potentially taking place in this world and we're paying attention to one woman's struggle with bullying (not condoning the bullying, but if they're locking talking animal professors in cages, and she's getting bullied, then). I imagine I wouldn't have this same thought with the stage musical version (and I imagine the book goes into greater depth of the other ongoings in Oz because a book can stretch its legs).
