In 2018 I got hired at the student union building as an AV technician and I was the only non-film major. It was my very first week and this one guy I worked with named Jon put this on the office tv and just left the room with his backpack and everything. Since it was my first week I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to turn it off so I just kept it on. Then 8 of my senior film major coworkers walked into the office at the same time and saw me just sitting there with Magnolia on and they all burst out laughing and said “are you watching Magnolia right now???? You’re crazy!!! New girl is watching Magnolia!!!!!!” And then I realized I got pranked and had to explain I was not watching magnolia and that I had no idea who PTA was.
And now PTA is probably my favorite director and one of those seniors that laughed at me is my best friend Nicole and I finally watched this movie and it’s just as amazing as everyone said it is. It’s probably the closest to an Infinite Jest movie as we’ll ever get but maybe I’m just saying that because I’m reading it right now and it also is sprawling and has sad relatable girl characters. This is the only time Tom Cruise has ever acted as someone besides Tom Cruise and it’s amazing. I think the singing scene was a little stupid but PTA was just going sicko mode so I have to respect that. If for some reason you’ve been putting this off because the run time is intimidating please just put it on, it’s so amazing and if you like PTA you’re gonna love this.
