This certainly isn’t a soulless cash grab. Burton seamlessly jumps right back into this world and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the product. Keaton is also going crazy here; he snaps right back into this character with ease. Catherine O’Hara is also killing it here; easily the funniest performance in the film. The sets are gorgeous, and the film is lit beautifully. But the screenplay has one big issue: there are way too many threads. Seriously, the film has maybe 2 threads that actually matter out of the 5-7 of them. It is at times a huge mess that is being held together with some really snappy dialogue. Clearly, as my score indicates, this didn’t ruin the film for me and I’d still venture to say this is a very good film. Burton is obviously no stranger to misses in his filmography, his version of planet of the apes to be exact, but I don’t think it’s crazy to say this is a pretty big hit for Tim.
