Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, you are my sunshine. You are ridiculous. I love you so

Brief notes
- definitely gets better once Astrid goes into the afterlife, a lot of the first big chunk of the movie is mid
- Monica Belluci was very beautiful but I’m afraid her character is the weakest part of the plot and in the end I really didn’t know what purpose she served other than as a filler. Her entrance is the coolest part of her character and every time she returns on screen, she lends the movie less and less :(
- loved danny devito
- loved how they put so many different dead people and depictions of death. That’s one part that I always enjoyed about the first and for the most part I really enjoyed them here
- fun lighting, practical effects, and gags. Loved the expansion of the afterlife, that world was my favorite part of the original
- idk what Willem Dafoe was doing but it was silly and consistently left me confused every time he was on screen
- whole cast was great but Jenna Ortega and Catherine O’Hara really stood out. Delia Deetz cracks me the fuck up I adore her. I was definitely skeptical at first tho with her becoming a successful pretentious artist instead of a crazy rejected one, initially I was worried it was gonna make the whole thing way too self important, but of course Catherine O’Hara is a gem and knew exactly what to do and how to make it work
- Michael Keaton’s new version of the juice is quite good, truly just got better as the film went on.
-Justin Theroux’s character was so insufferable and the truth serum bit at the end had a huge payoff for me. It made everything make sense
-there are some really random bits in here that are there just for the sake of it and they were so fun
-all the bobs escaping and running around on Halloween was so cute and funny
-gets pretty referential at times, it was right on the border of too much but I think for the most part it still managed to work. I enjoyed the barbershop and bridge references the best, or at least they stuck out in my mind the most. I also liked how the model was used
- In the beginning I wasn’t totally convinced with the continuity of Lydia as a character, but by the end I was, which I was pleasantly surprised with. I do wish I liked her more though. I loved her so much in the original and I do feel like some of her personality was lost here. She just didn’t seem to have much, which makes sense since most of her role in the plot revolved around everyone else. We didn’t get a whole lot of time to settle in with her as an adult. I missed her a bit
- The third act was really fun and I enjoyed the conclusion! The trailers and Winona Ryder’s talk of the characters made me think Lydia was choosing to marry Beetlejuice, and that left me feeling weird, so I was relieved when they didn’t end up together and he remained a nightmare of sorts to her even after.
-more singing than I expected? That’s one part that was slightly too referential and did not feel organic at all. Specifically the one around the end that was clearly calling back to Day-O and the dinner scene, not when the juice is serenading Lydia from the model. That one made me laugh
-definitely some weird and very questionable choices dispersed throughout the runtime. Ol’ Burton is still racist, what a surprise. And why oh why are we bringing up Jeffrey ‘pedophile’ Jones’ character so much

Overall I have mixed feelings, but it wasn’t terrible, and even had a number of charming, enjoyable qualities, and for that I’m glad. I knew it wasn’t gonna be amazing but the trailers had me slightly afraid, so I am glad it’s better than that.

Still confused, though, on the purpose of Monica Belluci’s character. They needed to do more with her. She’s like half a character with half a reason for existing
