A family picture with an adapted script by Charlie Kaufman. Yes, it is existential fun. I'm indifferent about the song choices, and some would wish this pushes the limitations of usual kid-friendly animated fare much more. This is still a nice surprise of an early Netflix release. The narrative uses self-awareness in a way that isn't lame or groan-worthy, so that's a thumbs up. It got me with the moment of Orion watching and being critical of a movie featuring anthropomorphic trash. Then, a short time later when he wants his parents to read a David Foster Wallace book to him just to prolong turning off the lights before bedtime. Just a few minutes later, the personified figure of Dark presents a (very) short movie about his existence which contains narration by Werner Herzog and "Titles by Saul Bass". I would like to see that short be extended.
