The New York premiere of Seymour Ruck (a film I produced) was last night at the Manhattan Film Festival. It was a great screening, in a block with four other dark comedies. When we got home, I was certain my wife wouldn't want to spend our hangout time watching even more movies. And then! She suggested The Nice Guys. I've never reached for the remote so fast.
The perfect hangout movie. Top tier rewatchable. Everyone in the cast and crew firing on all cylinders. Not sure there's enough plot here to warrant a running time beyond 90 minutes, but given the lack of a sequel I'll take all the Crowe and Gosling that's available. Speaking of that sequel we all want... it's only been 7 years. Go ahead and use that, set the sequel in 1984, and let's get our '80s LA on!
*was watching the way everyone allowed children and teenagers to wade in and out of the deep end of the social pool at parties that included porn stars and hard drugs... is this the most accurate depiction of that LA party scene that saw just about every rockstar sleeping with 13 year old groupies?
