Upon rewatch I’m really taken by this film. The level of filmmaking it takes to make something of this size is impressive. It’s a love letter, a homage, a re-examination of musicals from the golden Hollywood era. As someone who loves movie history and thinks a lot about the legacy of films, this is extremely high in my perception. I’ve bumped it up quite a bit from my last time watching it.
Damien Chazelle is a very special and important filmmaker, he understands the assignment. It also should be noted that it gives Gosling and Stone an official ascension into the stratosphere as movie stars.
