Shinya-senpai’s most mainstream film yet
This truly laid the groundwork for what was to come of twenty-tens American commercial cinema, for better or worse depending on who you ask.
In saying that though and divorcing this from the ensuing onslaught it’d usher in, it’s an aight action flic I suppose. Next to Gunns intergalactic outings this is one of the few films within this verse that in my opinion feels and behaves like an actual film and not some drab piece needing to connect to a much larger, much more faded puzzle. Truthfully it’s select scenes that stick out in my mind like the first official suit up, that rampage through Afghanistan, Tony and Peppers flirtatious retorts towards one another (this film being the only time their relationship ever feels genuine imo) and J.B. riding a Segway to yell at a grown up Ralphie. It’s moments like these that help to make this more than a standard wannabe blockbuster; which isn't to say everything in between is without worth, it's simply a case of me finding the sum of its parts greater than the whole.
As is, it carries enough charm and charisma to make it a slight cut above its competition, it supplies a sufficient amount of thrills and chuckles and as time would so, that was apparently enough for people. I should know, I was one of them.
