Bergman's Cinema #10
It's been a minute away from Bergman but it took awhile to get through Scenes From A Marriage. This review regards the five hour television version, I'm not sure how different it is compared to the theatrical cut but felt I should had started with the longer cut first.
Scenes From A Marriage continues with a Bergman favorite- a wedded couple struggling to keep their passion together. It's a common theme found in nearly every film of his I've seen so far. A few firsts with this epic by Bergman for me: this was the first color film of his I've seen, it's by far the newest, and it's the least abstract.
Everything is simple to digest. It was definitely slow in pacing at times- there is no music other than the introduction of episodes, there are very little characters outside of the couple, minimal outdoor settings, and the camerawork is stationary. All energy was sucked out and lead strictly on dialogue thus making the character performances that much stronger.
I can't say it was a favorite for me, I'll eventually give the theatrical cut a run to see if I'm missing anything because of the majority five star ratings but this was essentially a soap. Not exactly my cup of tea.
