April 2024 is fully owned by Josh O’Connor and his Italian directors.
La Chimera not only beautifully displays O’Connor’s finest acting skills, but also establishes Alice Rohrwacher as an auteur and the leading figure of modern neorealism. More than just confidently exploring themes of cognitive immobility and commercial exploitation, this film entertains with an enchanting mix of genres: magical realism, adventure, romance, comedy, and mystery. It’s also filled with metaphors to reflect on, mainly those bridging life and death/past and present.
Technically speaking, this piece of art is nearly perfect. I’m once again obsessed with Hélène Louvart’s cinematography; the way she used three different film formats to convey meaning and enhance themes is just genius! The editing is top-notch. And the supporting cast is superb; each actor brings a unique personality to their characters, making the story so much more lively and engaging. As a whole, it’s poetic, folkloric, and fascinating—I would die in Italy just for Arthur to profane my tomb (he wouldn’t find much anyway).
