Black and white cinematography added to the impending sense of doom ahead. The cinematography effectively captured the bleakness of the landscape and sense of isolation from the beginning. The tension between Dafoe and Pattinson was palpable from the outset. Weaving together elements of the folklore of the sea and the struggles of ancient mythology (Prometheus) the storyline was the somewhat predictable descent into madness line.
Plenty to read into the story ... are the characters one and the same, a older and younger self dealing with their demons? What was revealed when Pattinson finally saw the light?
